ArtQuilts by Sandra
My ArtQuilts are one of a kind and intended for hanging on a wall. They are made up of a layered "sandwich" of a fabric backing, a batting and a top designed and quilted by me.
While still a child I stood behind my grandmother's treadle sewing machine while she pieced quilts. I threaded the needle for her. Sewing and quilting has always been a part of my life.
After making many quilts from known patterns, I discovered the excitement of using my photography and my fabric "stash" to create fabric art for walls. I often begin with a photo and a handful of fabric I think has possibilities for the quilt. But, within a very short time, the fabrics seem to develop a will of their own and take over; I find I am compelled to use them in unexpected ways. Thus, the finished product is never what I'd planned and I am always glad that it is so. Sometimes, I start with a piece of fabric and a "what if" outlook, especially in regard to the more abstract quilts.
I combine traditional methods with innovation using whatever materials the quilt might suggest, or whatever is handy, just to see what will happen. Some of the materials that might be used are hand and machine embroidery, beads, copper wire, wood, as well as any and all types of fabric.
I enjoy doing ArtQuilts because of the freedom to explore possibilities and to express what the literal eye doesn't see. It is a delight to create the quilts and a further pleasure to know someone else enjoys having them hanging on their walls.
