My lifetime dream was always to be a full time artist. I started drawing as a young child with charcoal from the woodstove and paper grocery bags used to heat our family home. The main focus of my painting is the natural environment and culture. I will sometimes add more subtle matter or figures of spiritual and cultural significance to me. Their sometimes veiled meaning not obvious at first, but may require thought and reflection.
I have experimented with different media and found that I liked to paint with oils best. Oil paint stays true to color in that it dries to the same shade, as it is when it is wet. I like to paint things to look as real as I can. "Realistic style" takes patience, and I keep working to hone my technique. You cannot just lay the paint on the canvas with a brush. Oil paint has to be blended well onto the canvas and so it takes a lot of brushwork and is time consuming.
Some of my favorite places to find landscapes and subjects to paint are the Black Hills region of South Dakota, Northern Minnesota, and the Four Corners area of the Southwest because of their diversity of natural environmental beauty and rich culture. I feel fortunate that I can live in one of these three places that motivate me to paint, the Black Hills of South Dakota. My surroundings inspire me. I hope to capture and preserve many moments in time of breathtaking natural beauty, and subjects that reflect rich indigenous culture.
