Anita Paige - Wonderful Wire - Rapid City
Born and raised in Wyoming, I had no idea I would be joining the artist's world, although I grew up surrounded by artisans. Introduced to wire work while temporarily living in Anchorage, Alaska several years ago, I brought my enthusiasm for that art form with me to the Black Hills area when I returned to Rapid City. I have since learned that I'm just using a centuries-old process to make modern-day pieces.
My primary interest is making jewelry with wire and cabochons - but sometimes I incorporate beads, shells and other objects in my designs. (I have a friend who said, "You'll put wire on anything!") For my jewelry, I work with primarily sterling silver and gold filled wire. My criterion for any piece of jewelry is that it have some hand-worked wire in the design.
I enjoy challenging the wire and myself when I work because it is fascinating to see what the wire will do. My first teacher reminded her class that 'you are the master of the wire - it is not the master of you.' There are times when this contest of mastery comes out pretty even, but I'm proud of my successes.
