Sarah Peterson has been a potter for 30 years. She attended the Young Artists Studio at the Chicago Art Institute studying glassblowing during her High School years. She attended Mankato State College to pursue her glassblowing interest. Pottery was a prerequisite to taking the glass studio, and pottery became her main interest.

The approach to pottery Sarah uses comes from a tradition of acknowledging and celebrating the elements in balance. Pottery, in particular, epitomizes the balance of earth, wind, fire and water. This balance is a starting point for her in her attempt to achieve the same elemental balance of earth, wind, fire and water by respecting the spirit of each element. "These four basic elements are of the natural geologic process, which the potter only mimics," Sarah says.

The medium she has chosen allows her to combine her passion of the pottery process and her passion for painting. She works with terra cotta clay and applies an opaque white lead-free glaze known as majolica to the surface. She than hand paints patterns with a watercolor-like overglaze. Many of her patterns have been inspired by the "beauty that surrounds me." The pieces are then fired, and the pattern is fused into the glaze.

Metallic lusters in 24 caret gold, platinum and copper have recently been added to her work. The clear lead-free glaze she is currently using with the copper luster brings out the rich red terra cotta color of the clay. All of Sarah's pieces are made to be used, are dishwasher safe, and, with the exception of the metallic luster, are microwaveable. All pieces are non-toxic and safe for everyday use.

Hummingbird Pottery was chosen for the name of her business, as hummingbirds are the bearers of joy. Sarah hopes her pieces bring you as much joy as she has had in making them. Her work is displayed in galleries in Denver, Colorado; Hot Springs, South Dakota; Hill City, South Dakota and Rapid City, South Dakota.
