Description:

WINNER! 2009 IPPY (Independent Publishers) Outstanding Book of the Year, "Story Teller of the Year" Award.

These wonderfully entertaining stories were passed on to Frank Bull Tail Scout when he was ten years old, living in Porcupine, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation, by his Grandfathers James Locke and Titus Scout, respected elders. They are valued as part of the verbal social history of the Oglala Lakota people. They tell of such things as strong boyhood friendships, traditional Sioux daily life, and some fierce fighting between the Sioux and Crow tribes, once bitter enemies. More importantly, the tales are saturated with opportunities and situations designed to impart the values of respect, bravery, family and community that have always been fundamental to the Lakota (Sioux) people.

Featured: 1) A Story of Two Boys from the Great Sioux Nation; 2) The Legend of Lover's Leap - A True Story; and 3) Boy Raised By Wolves <<>> Additional chapters include: "The Origin of the Stories", "Old Ways of the Sioux", and "Sioux Valley", an award-winning song written by the author.

Since Mr. Scout suffered a stroke several years ago, it was very difficult for him to speak. With this book, the oral tradition of teaching through the bedtime story will be preserved for his own grandchildren and generations to come. Frank's desire is to share these special stories with people from all cultures.

This book is richly illustrated by Jim Yellowhawk, a nationally recognized Lakota / Iroquois artist who also grew up in South Dakota. Jim's creative vision and style are the perfect complement to these traditional stories.
